Travel Tryout Rules

It is vital that at all levels tryouts be conducted as objectively as possible.

Criteria for two teams

  • If 32 or more players show up for the tryout, and the trainer feels that there are enough quality players to form two teams, he will recommend this to the travel board. If the travel board agrees, they will pass their recommendation along to the Indians board. The Indians board will weigh the all the issues involved: the availability of coaches, the quality of players and the impact on the intramural program. If, after that, the recommendation is accepted, two teams will be formed, an A team and a B team.
  • If a player is selected for the A team but wants to play with the B team, he may relinquish his roster spot with no consequences.

Scheduling

  • For the youngest team, tryouts will be scheduled by May 15th.
  • Existing teams can’t schedule tryouts until after June 1st.
  • All tryouts and callbacks will be finished by the Monday before the end of school according to the calendar of the Floral Park Bellerose School District. This will give us a week to deal with any issues before families start leaving on summer vacations.
  • If a player needs to be replaced during the season, the coach will confer with the travel board which will make a recommendation to the Indians board.

There are three ways for a replacement player to be found:

  • If there are two teams and the A team loses a player, the A coach may ask the B coach for a player. The B coach is under no obligation to agree.
  • If there is only one team or if the injured player is on the B team, the coach may ask the travel board for a player who was at the original tryout for the team.
  • If there is only one team or if the injured player is on the B team and the coach wants to approach a player who was NOT at the original tryout, the coach will have to arrange for an open tryout.

In each of these cases, the Indians board will have the final say.

Trainer participation

  • U9-the team will be picked by the trainer.
  • U10 & U11-the team will be picked by the trainer and the coach together. They will both submit rosters to the travel board. The coach will be allowed to select one player who is not on the trainer’s roster. If the coach wants to pick more than one player who is NOT on the trainer’s roster, he will have to consult with the travel board and, ultimately, the Indians board.
  • In the older age groups, the coach will hold open tryouts each year without a trainer. However, he may request the assistance of a trainer.
  • All trainers will be approved by the Indians and will be chosen from the organization with which we are currently working.
  • In all cases, a team may not be chosen by the trainer who regularly trains the team.

Selecting a coach

  • Once the roster for a new team is selected the travel board will entertain coaching applications from the parents on the team. The board will recommend one or more possible coaches to the Indians board, and they will decide.
  • The Indians board reserves the right to change coaches in the best interests of the program at any time.
